Hike a Dormant Volcano

Just a 30-minute drive from our ranch brings you to the magnificent volcano peak of Ostrvica. Standing at 758 meters above sea level, this extinct volcanic cone dominates the landscape and offers truly panoramic views. On clear days you can see all the way to Belgrade! Ostrvica is not just a natural wonder, but a place steeped in history: its summit hosts the ruins of a medieval fortress, once a crucial stronghold during the 14th and 15th centuries.

The Hike

Duration: about 35-50 minutes to reach the summit, depending on your pace.

• Level 1: A steep path with many steps, mostly on soil. This is the warm-up phase.
• Level 2: Rocky terrain. Time to pick up the challenge.
• Level 3: Climbing begins. This section includes very steep parts where you’ll use a via ferrata-style aid. At the top of this level you reach the lower peak with amazing views. For those who dare, one final steep climb leads to the highest peak, where the fortress ruins stand.

What Makes Ostrvica Special

• Ostrvica is a rare volcanic cone in the Rudnik massif, formed of volcanic eruptive rocks (mainly andesite), about 18-20 million years old.
• It consists of two rounded peaks whose height difference is just a few meters. The summit is rocky, partially barren, dotted with shrubs and rare grass.
• The site also has rich medieval history. It was an important fortress, changing hands through wars, used by Serbian rulers, and repeatedly attacked by the Ottomans. Legends say the fortress was built by “Prokleta Jerina” (“Damned Jerina”).
• In 2009 Ostrvica was declared a Natural Monument, recognizing both its geological uniqueness and cultural importance.
